SPA ORANGINA, Pur jus d’orange et eau de Spa

This rare Art Deco advertisement features the original Spa Orangina lady, elegantly presenting a glass of fresh, sparkling orange lemonade. The design is memorable for its simple yet powerful visual association. Just as Spa water was once personified by a woman from the Belgian Ardennes, Spa Orangina is represented here by a Spanish woman with dark skin, hair so black it has blue highlights, and a traditional flamenco comb.
Her depiction reflects the historical context: at the time, Spain was the leading exporter of oranges, a fruit still considered a luxury item across much of Europe and often given to children only on Saint Nicholas Day. This connection made her the perfect symbolic figure for the new orange-based drink.
Set against a deep black background and encircled by a gentle halo of light—as if illuminated by a spotlight—she stands out. The vivid orange of the fruit is the only warm color in the composition, creating a striking contrast with the black and emerald green tones characteristic of the Art Deco style.
The design is from the Hypsos Studio in Brussels, where the first posters appeared shortly after the launch of Spa Orangina in 1934. In 1948, the design was adapted into an enamel sign by Emaillerie Belge in Brussels. On June 7th, 1948, a limited production order of only 100 signs was placed. Today, merely around 10 examples are left, most in poor or heavily restored condition. Only 3 to 4 are documented in excellent condition. This piece is among those exceptionally rare survivors. It has been in private hands for over 25 years.
For serious collectors, this is likely a unique—and perhaps final—opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of Art Deco beverage advertising.
