NICOLAS GLOU-GLOU
How wonderful to have such an exceptional masterpiece in our gallery! It hardly needs an introduction, but for those who are unfamiliar: the Nicolas, Nectar et Glou-Glou is very rare, and even more in this condition.
In 1922 the French wine house Nicolas, then led by Etienne Nicolas, commissioned Jules Isnard Dransy to design a poster illustrating that the company delivered wine directly to your home. The delivery man, given the name Nectar, became one of France’s most popular and instantly recognizable advertising figures. This sign beautifully showcases Nectar alongside his son named “Glou-Glou”.
“Glou-glou” is a playful French expression that mimics the sound of pouring and drinking wine, often used to describe wines that are smooth, lively, and easy to enjoy.
This illustration highlights that wine was both an everyday product and a social staple, enjoyed at home and in cafés. It also reflects the professionalized distribution of the era, with personal delivery and apprenticeship-style work culture, while turning advertising into a relatable, human story.
A timeless statement piece!
