E-RELOJ ELECTION
Another little jewel hits our gallery ! Sitting on top of the world a strong woman proudly lifts an oversized pocket watch and shows us, and the rest of the universe, the exact time. The design of the watch is beautifully detailed, and the womans’ dress seems to float weightlessly in space. In the background we see stars and other planets, and dreaming away, it is easy for us to imagine the woman is holding eternity in her hands. While graphic masters Jean D’Ylen (1886-1938) and Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) were competing with eachother to each come with the better and catchiest design from their drawing table, the clients at Studio Vercasson in Paris didn’t shy away from asking both artists to come up with their designs individually for the same brand or customer. Posterart history learned us for example Jean D’Ylen designed for both ZENITH and LONGINES watches, and Leonetto Cappiello did the same thing for LONGINES and … ZENITH. What we also know is that Cappiello was also designing for ELECTION watches, and once we put all these designs together, we have reason enough to believe that this E Reloj Election design must also have been made by the hands of Leonetto Cappiello. Hopefully an original drawing or gouache, signed by the artist, might pop-up one day…
As far as our records go this sign has never made it to any auction or catalogue. We could only trace 4 to 5 pieces known of which 3 of them in extremely bad condition, where this one – despite the impact near left side – is still in pretty good overall condition, with original gloss and fresh colors.
Design by unknown, probably Leonetto Cappiello
